Stone Aside Publishing has announced a Q1 2012 release for Epic 4: The Glorious Becoming. Continuing the story of Scott Remington and the Fourteenth of Novosibirsk, TGB picks up several months after the events of Epic 3: Hero. Additional plot information will be revealed as the release date draws near.

ttention Epic fans...this might just be the year! Progress on Epic 4: The Glorious Becoming (hereby shortened to TGB) has been soaring, and though there's still much to be done, a release in 2011 might just be in the works.

Between now and the release, I'll be taking opportunities to preview some of the TBG's characters—both old and new. In addition to discussing some of the burning questions revolving around the characters, I'll be offering a unique author's perspective on their importance to the series, the process of writing them, and what one can expect from them in the future. I might even tease you with a few "sneak peeks" of them in action in TGB!

The best part? You get to vote for who gets previewed! The official poll is located on the Epic Universe Forum, at http://www.epicuniverse.com/forums. Just look for the newly added "Epic 4: The Glorious Becoming" forum. YOU MUST REGISTER TO VOTE IN THE POLLS! Once the votes are cast, the previews will be posted in the forum.

Each round will consist of four characters, so make your vote count. Some of these characters might only be coming around once!

Writing 301: Dynamic Characters

The citizens of New Dallas pointed to the rooftops, where the escaping band of thugs had fled minutes before. An emptied bank, a city block ablaze, and a dozen dead police officers in their wake. It was one of several large-scale criminal strikes that August--and it was only the seventh.

"Look!" a citizen shouted. "Over there!" The crowd's focus shifted to the new figure on the rooftops. It was a masked man New Dallas knew well. Their faces uplifted, the citizens shouted in jubilation. Their hero had come again, as he had so many times before.

The Paladin.

Silver cloak flowing, the Paladin leapt from rooftop to rooftop as the crowd cheered below. They lifted their hands triumphantly as he landed on the criminals' very rooftop, disappearing out of view beyond its ledge. They knew their city would be safe again.

Stopping in their tracks, bags of loot in hand, the criminals stared as the Paladin charged toward them. In the illumination of helicopter lights, the hero dove at the villains, knocking them backward into a roof shack. They were out of the media's view.

Rising from the dusty floor of the shack, the Paladin glanced back at the door behind him. Giving it a solid kick, he slammed it shut. His attention returned to the three thugs, who had now risen to their feet. The Paladin approached them.

"We got twenty thousand," the head criminal told him, "but we also got this." Handing the Paladin a document, he brushed off his knees. "I snatched it from a security folder. It's a manifest of every armored truck in the city. You know how much we can get for this information alone?"

Eyes poring over the document, the Paladin nodded. "I'll be in touch. We're going to need a major diversion to pull this off." His eyes narrowed. "Now stab me, right here. Not too deeply." The knife was inserted, and the Paladin winced. He addressed them through his pain. "I'll hold onto the manifest, but in the meantime, one of you has to come with me. I'll say the rest of you escaped. Don't worry...the twenty thousand will more than cover bail."

Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. That's not how it's supposed to happen! I mean, this guy is the Paladin, right? The champion of New Dallas! The shining beacon in darkened times! He doesn't, gasp, work with the bad guys!

Get your pencils out, everybody. Class is in session.

One of the biggest struggles of writing is creating dynamic characters that readers will want to read about. And unfortunately for us in the land of space aliens and killer robots, no genre is more susceptible to poorly-written characters than science-fiction. Why is this?

In my experience, most science-fiction writers have zero trouble coming up with strange worlds, new creatures, and shockingly in-depth military structures and social systems. Heck, we even write up ten-page histories for every single starship in our fleet. We agonize over the finest, minutest of details, until we know our created universe inside and out, backwards and forwards, down and up. Wonderful! This is fantastic. We're ready to write our story!

So Captain Bob is a brave spacefarer. Then he comes this awesome planet with three-eyed blue creatures that talk in odors and see in sounds, and they carry huge metal spears that can somehow channel power from other dimensions--

WRONG! Back up the shuttle craft and forget for a moment that you just wrote an encyclopedia of sci-fi facts and figures for this universe you created. The plain truth of the matter is that nobody cares. Nobody cares that Earth was destroyed by a species of insects four thousand years ago, or that when Wakatoids and Bozanoids get jiggy, they produce hybrid monsters that eat metal and puke bullets. It's sad, I know, but true. The good news, though, is that there is something readers care about! And its name is...

Bob.

We have a maddening tendency to create unique, fantastic worlds and situations, only to toss in boring and cardboard characters to take the readers through them. We spend so much time and effort on nitty-gritty details that will never matter that by the time it's time to create our protagonist, we're tired, drained, and cranky, and end up with sort of a "aw hell, just throw whoever in there" mentality. Then when our "whoever" isn't doing anything for us as writers, we conclude that we'll never write anything, that we can start things but never finish them, etc. etc. etc., insert every "I haven't written anything" excuse here.

The Paladin was an ordinary superhero story about a guy in a cape leaping from building to building, blah, blah, blah, is anything else on TV? It wasn't until the character, not the setting, threw us a curve ball that our ears perked and we said, "hey now, this is different."

The same thing could happen with Bob. Why is he a captain? Well, because he happened to be good at it. Kind of like people who have jobs not because they like them, but because they were always able to do them well. Sound boring? Dig a little deeper. Because Bob's reason for being a captain is skill-based and not passion-based, he wrestles with a ton of self-doubt, putting up a front to his crew that he's some sort of brave, driven leader. Guilt overwhelms him, because he knows that just because he's capable of being a captain, that doesn't mean he deserves to. His blood pressure is through the roof because his inward struggle is severely stressing him out, and his frequent visits to the med bay have caused his crew to wonder if their beloved captain is all right. But he can't bring himself to tell them the truth...that he doesn't want to be their captain at all.

And NOW we drop him onto this awesome planet with three-eyed blue creatures that talk in odors and see in sounds, and they carry huge metal spears that can somehow channel power from other dimensions...and so on, and so on. The point is, none of that other stuff really matters if Bob isn't completely interesting and real. Real is the key word. If people can relate to Bob, they won't care what kind of planet his ship crashes on. They'll want to read about Bob wherever he goes.

And just like that...you're writing a story. Not a sci-fi encyclopedia, but a story. Now when you get to all the fun stuff that we sci-fi guys love to get to, we've got a protagonist who can not only exist in the confines of them, but also make the setting itself more interesting just in how he reacts to everything around him.

I don't know about you guys, but I already want to know what happens to poor old Bob. Does something give him a change of heart? Does he quit on his crew? Does he confide in anyone about his feelings as a captain? And if so, what's...(here it comes)...HER name?

Ahhh, now it's getting fun!

So write on, sci-fi junkies. Create some dynamic characters, then do what you love to do best. Let your imaginations go wild. You might be surprised at how much you can write.

Some men go to war for the glory. Some men go to war to escape.

For fans of the Epic novel series, those two sentences are familiar ones. Lee Stephen's Dawn of Destiny, the first of eight planned installments in the science-fiction series, was released in December of 2006. "When I forwent the traditional route to publish independently, I was aware of the odds for success," Stephen said. "Typically, independent books don't find a lot of it. The market's not tipped in our favor." The Louisiana native explained that, on average, independent books sell between 50-150 copies in their lifetime, noting that those statistics vary depending on the source. "Fifty was kind of the first milestone I set for myself. I said, 'if I can get past fifty, I'll be exceeding minimum expectations.' You want to be optimistic, but you also want to be realistic. So for me, success started with that number.'" With that mindset, a straightforward website, and a release limited to internet outlets like Amazon.com, Dawn of Destiny set off on its quest to exceed that goal of fifty sold copies.

By the end of 2007, he'd sold almost seven hundred.

"It was crazy. I literally had no idea who was buying those books. I'd get emails from readers asking when the next book was coming out, and all I wanted to ask was, 'where the heck did you even hear about me?'"

The culprit, it turned out, was word-of-mouth. As more readers talked, more new readers listened. Before long, a fan base had been born, complete with message board, Facebook group, and official podcast. "I love the Epic series," said Stephanie Police, podcast host. "It's a very realistic take on what lies ahead for Earth, even being science fiction. The characters are likeable and easily identified with and the storyline is thrilling and addicting. I'm not a fan of science fiction but the Epic series has been added indefinitely to my list of favorite things to read."

Up until this point, fans of the series have only been able to enjoy reading its installments. They're about to get their first chance to hear them. According to Stephen, the desire to create an audio book has been with him since Dawn of Destiny was released. In 2011, that desire will be fulfilled. With a cast of over twenty voice actors, Epic is priming to be released as a chapter-by-chapter serial. The goal? To experience Epic like never before.

"Every writer has that ultimate dream of having their work brought to the silver screen," said Stephen "That's the experience I wanted to create from an audio perspective. No one has experienced Epic like this." From adrenaline-pumping firefights to earth-shattering explosions, the audio incarnation of Dawn of Destiny will put listeners in the middle of the battle for Earth. But where the audio book truly shines, explains Stephen, is in the voice-work of the cast.

"Auditioning cast members was difficult, but fun. Every character in Epic is unique, and that needed to be reflected in the finished product. Well over two hundred actors auditioned for the project. It was such a neat experience to just close my eyes, listen to the various audition files I'd receive, and visualize the characters they were auditioning for. Not just anyone could have been Becan McCrae, or Captain Clarke, or Ignatius van Thoor." And most certainly, not Scott Remington. "Without a doubt, the casting of Scott was the most important. This is my protagonist, the guy who carries Epic. If Scott's wrong, the whole project's wrong."

Enter Stewart Cummings. A Vancouver native, Cummings' career has included improv with the Upright Citizens' Brigade in New York City, work in various incarnations of commercial media, and script writing for television and stage. But most importantly for Dawn of Destiny, he had the perfect voice for Scott Remington. "I heard Stewart, and I was blown away. He had the perfect mix of command and sincerity that had to be reflected in Scott's voice. The moment I heard his audition, I was like, 'that's the guy-that's Scott.' He made that decision very easy."

"Voicing Scott has been exciting," said Cummings. "He's a dynamic character. He's a young and inexperienced soldier, yet seems to possess the judgment and skills of a seasoned veteran. But I'd say these skills are only half of what makes him a strong character. Scott's faith is constantly being tested, and doing what's right and what's wrong isn't always clear. He is surrounded by people that aren't always fighting for the same 'good.' So he's pulled in a lot of directions that really test his spirit. I really like Scott's sense of humor, too. It plays well in several scenes and lightens the mood a lot when having the small task of saving humankind from total destruction!"

Cummings joins a varied cast, ranging from industry veterans to fresh new talent. According to Stephen, each and every one of them went above and beyond. "This project is going to blow your mind. The level at which these guys went at it is amazing. At one moment you've got guys screaming at the top of their lungs in the middle of a firefight, and at the next you have quiet moments that rip your heart out. I couldn't have asked for a better crew."

Fans can expect the Dawn of Destiny audio book in 2011, though a more specific time period may be announced soon. "Before The Glorious Becoming," said Stephen, referring to Epic's as-of-yet unreleased fourth installment. "Hopefully this will give fans something to enjoy while they wait for the next book. I know it's been a long wait! It'll be worth it."

The Glorious Becoming - UPDATE

1 year, 4 months, 20 days.

That's how long its been since Epic 3: Hero was officially published. That's almost how long its taken for me to feel like writing again.

I've gotten a couple questions about the progress of book four, and without doing what most companies do by sugarcoating everything, I'll be completely honest in confessing that TGB's writing process has not gone well up until this point. It's not that the story isn't good - it is. It's not that I'm at a plot crossroads - the direction of Epic is still for the most part on course. The simple truth is that Hero was the single most draining piece of literature that I've ever written. It was the kind of "draining" that left me wanting to call it a career. The book was necessary. I feel it was done well. It just cost me my love for writing. Call it the effects of a lot of life changes, call it the result of pumping out three books in three years, call it what you will. I just know that when Hero was done, I didn't want to do this anymore.

Over the past 1 year and 4 months, I've officially "pumped out" 40,000 words of book four, which is slightly less than half of Outlaw Trigger (the smallest book in the series). You'll notice I left out the 20 days, there. And that's the good part.

In the past 20 days, I've written over 20,000 words.

I cannot remember being this excited to write. I can't remember loving to write this much. What was only recently a frustrating obligation has reignited itself as a passion. Maybe time worked its healing magic; maybe life started to settle down. But for whatever reason, I've recaptured what I've been missing for so long.

So enough about that, right? What about book four? Well, I've already explained that I'm not the sugarcoating type of guy. So I won't sugarcoat this next part, either:

Epic 4: The Glorious Becoming is going to be the most thrilling, shocking, revealing, and captivating book you have ever read.

Teasers for book four will be few and far between, as much like Outlaw Trigger, to know anything in advance is to deprive you of something that needs to be experienced firsthand. But this one's going to be fun. So get ready, Epic Universe. This is what you've been waiting for.

February Update

Had a chance to sit down with Lee and talk about what's been going on in his life.

What are you up to?
Lindsey and I are in the midst of a bathroom renovation right now, and I think that might be the tone-setter of 2010 for us. We bought our first house last year and are excited about making some improvements this year. Life is in full swing!
I've also been doing a lot of amateur astronomy lately, as one of my Christmas gifts from Lindsey was a Celestron Omni XLT 120mm Refractor. It could be the best present I have ever received, as I've wanted a telescope my whole life! So far I've gotten great looks at Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and the Moon. As the seasons change, I should get better opportunities to see the other planets, though Mercury, Uranus, and Neptune will be challenges. Venus will be really viewable in June, and I'm looking forward to that, too. Of course there are other things I'm aiming to get up-close-and-personal with, including galaxies and nebulae. I do hope to get into astrophotography at some point, so if that happens, I'll definitely post pictures!

How is The Glorious Becoming coming along?
TGB has been a very frustrating process for me, and I think there's still a little bit of that hangover from Hero lingering. As it stands at the time I'm writing this, I'm just under 40,000 words into the story, which is about 25%. A full year after Hero, can you can see how slow a process this has been.
Does that mean I haven't been working? Not at all. In fact, a good deal of that 25% has been written twice. An unexpected new character entered the story, forcing me to go back and adjust the story to include him. Obviously I won't get into that now, but once TGB is out I'm sure I'll touch on the new character's impact (and it's a considerable one) at some point or another. I can summarize it by saying that TGB will be better with him in it.
No one should worry over the slow pace of TGB so far. My rough target is still 2011, which is very doable. In fact, I'm hitting a stride right now with the story, so there's an excellent chance that it'll hit its major turning point very soon, at which point I'll get a solid second wind of energy. The arc and story of TGB will be amazing, but it's a very, very draining story to write. It's very intense and very different from what fans have experienced so far. I can tease it best by saying that no one will see TGB coming. It's going to be great!

What are you reading at the moment?
Prior to our engagement, Lindsey and I went through 101 Questions to Ask Before you get Engaged. It was a great experience, and we've both found ourselves missing a book to read together. This Valentine's Day, she bought The Love Dare for us to start going through together again. I'm really looking forward to it. I think a lot of people look at relationship books such as those as reserved for troubled relationships only, but it's really not the case at all. There doesn't have to be anything wrong in a relationship or marriage for it to be strengthened. Heck, I hope my Saints get stronger in 2010, and they just won the Super Bowl!

What are you listening to?
E.S. Posthumus' third album, Makara, is amazing! This has definitely given me some recent energy for scenes in TGB. It's just an awesome, action-packed listen from start to finish.

What are you watching?
Right now, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I'm just as excited for Canada as I am for the USA! There are so many Canadians I work with for Epic, and it's great to see them winning gold medals for their home country.
Looking forward to curling and women's and couples' figure skating - those are always my favorites.
Prior to the Olympics, I was all Saints, all the time. You can't imagine the euphoria that the black and gold winning the Super Bowl caused here. I'm not sure that anyone outside of the New Orleans area can fully appreciate it.
Here's another fun fact for you...the Saints won the Super Bowl on February 7th. Scott Remington's birthday. :) How's that for Epic?

Hey Epicnauts!!! Believe or not I am alive! And so are my co-hosts! The podcast had to go on a brief hiatus for a little while due to our lives being picked up and shaken around like snow globes. However do not despair!

Lee's Battle of Chicago Tour

Last week, Lindsey and I got a chance to spend a few days in the city of Chicago. It was an amazing trip, and for those out there who have never seen this beautiful city, I highly recommend visiting. There's no shortage of places to go and things to experience.

For me, however, there was something truly special that I got to experience. In Dawn of Destiny, the first major battle of the whole series takes place on the streets of Chicago. The Battle of Chicago, as it came to be known, launched Scott Remington's career. While staying in the city, I actually got to walk the very streets that Scott and his comrades did. Having never visited Chicago prior to this trip, much of the Battle of Chicago was determined simply through research. Getting to actually walk it myself gave the battle a much deeper meaning. I made certain to take some photos, so I'll post them here and give you all the tour!

In the above picture, you can see the intersection near the mound of rubble that formed the "barricade" first encountered by Falcon Platoon. In fact, it's this very moment that made it on the back of the book cover. It's at the intersection of South Michigan and East Adams St., not far from Millennium Park in the city.

I actually had a few camera issues during the trip, but occasionally "glitches" turned out looking pretty cool. The orange effect in this picture reminded of how the city would look if it was really under attack, with the orange hues of fire as described in the book. This is the same location as the first picture. In this one, you can more clearly see the building on the right that would have actually been the one to form the barricade, toppling across the street.

Just one more photo of that spot, since it's the only photo that actually has me in it. You can actually see Dawn of Destiny in my hand.

For those wondering what building it was that bit the dust, this is it right here. You can see the security guard in the building staring out at me. I had to laugh a bit wondering what he'd think had he come out, asked me why I was taking pictures, to have me explain, "Because in the future, this building is going to be reduced to rubble." I'd probably be typing this journal from prison.

This is the other side of that same street, a cultural art museum. The barricade would have stretched from this building to the one in the previous picture. It was just neat to me to actually see how this would have played out had it been real. Anyway, that's enough with this one spot. Moving on!

In the Battle of Chicago, Scott and his strike team take an alleyway to South Wabash, which runs parallel to South Michigan. South Wabash is the street they use to venture to Van Buren, where they rescue the pinned operatives of Cougar Platoon. There's just one problem...there are no alleys connecting them! I'm sure, of course, that at some point in the future, once I'm famous and all-powerful, they'll put an alley around here in my honor, just to make my novel correct! Anyway, this is East Jackson St., one of the many streets that connect South Michigan and South Wabash.

Ironically, there were multiple alleys on East Jackson. So had there been an alleyway between South Michigan and South Wabash, this is what it would have looked like!

Once the alley was traversed in the novel, there was another wall of rubble, this time impassable, blocking Scott and his friends. It would have been the top of this very building that formed the impassable wall, having fallen into the street. This is also where the group was attacked by Bakma. Henrick got injured, Scott took over, and the rest was history!

This is the same location as the previous image. You can see the above-ground train system that runs along South Wabash. It gets some mention in the Battle of Chicago as well.

This is the same building mentioned two pictures above, which just happens to be a university. The lower half of the building is what Scott and his group would have traversed to bypass the mound. The man in the photo is obviously hiding from the impending alien attack.

This is the South Wabash / Van Buren intersection, probably the most notable city location in the book. This is where Scott rescues Cougar Platoon, then makes the ultimate decision to continue the platoon's mission of capturing a Bakma Carrier. There was a massive firefight here in the book.

This building is one that Scott would have traversed in order to actually reach Cougar Platoon.

Then, from the picture above, Scott would have looked across the street to discover the infamous old van used multiple times in the mission. It would have been parked right in this area.

This is the last photo of the tour, as it was getting late, and to reach any more areas of significance would have taken far too much time. Nonetheless, I felt accomplished getting to this point. This is the actual corner that Scott and the rescued members of Cougar Platoon would have taken refuge in - where Scott commed Lilan to ask permission to continue Cougar's mission. The old van would have been parked right in front of those windows at the corner, having sheltered the operatives as they climbed through the window. Even though it was a rough rescue mission, I'm glad they got to chill out for a while in Gina's Cuisine, with soups, Italian beef, and burgers!

As you can see, not everything is quite perfect. Alleys aren't always where you'd like them to be, buildings aren't always what you expect them to be, and sometimes fiction doesn't quite match reality. But that's all right. It was a total joy to get to walk this route. It gave me a perspective of the characters and the battle that I'd never had before. If any of you guys ever end up in the Chicago area, give this little walk a try! It's a neat experience.

Next stop...Novosibirsk!

What are you up to?
I've been doing a lot of writing lately, though not all of it has been Epic-related. I'm currently one of the staff writers for SaintsReport, where I write a feature called the "Bayou Bulletin." It's NFL satire with a sprinkle of actual sports journalism mixed in. I'm a huge New Orleans Saints fan and season ticket holder, so it's been awesome to be a part of what SaintsReport has going on. My columns are uploaded every Wednesday (and occasionally Thursday). Don't go looking for deep, complex analysis, now. It's all written in fun.

How is The Glorious Becoming coming along?
TGB has been coming along very slowly, which I kind of expected. I know some people might read the above and think, "why is he writing football satire when he could be working on book four?" Don't think of it that way. Hero completely burnt me out, to the point where I really had to take some time to step away. As a writer, I never really stop being creative, but my mediums for creativity are always changing. There was a time in the latter months of Hero when the book took up 100% of my creative energy. That's not a good thing.

Right now, I'm about 50% SaintsReport, 20% Epic, and 30% other projects, with Epic beginning to finally pick up steam. It's taken a little while to get "un-burnt," but right now I'm more excited about TGB than ever before, and I'm not saying that just to say it. I'm coming up on one of the preordained turning points in the series, and it's got me really excited about fleshing it out. I said from the day Hero got released that TGB was a long ways off, and that stance hasn't changed. But take my word for it - this book is going to be well worth the wait.

Honestly, most of my leisure reading right now is from Sports Illustrated and ESPN. I spend a lot of time browsing sports message boards, too.

Haha, I can just hear Epic fans right now, reading these answers and thinking, "yeah, this guy's not as deep as I thought he was." What can I say? I live for football when Fall rolls around.

What are you listening to?
Here's something I can answer in-depth! I have been playing the tar out of Chris Cornell's Scream album over the past few months. That whole album is just an amazingly underrated project. I could do without the bits of profanity here and there, but that's why they invented the "skip" button.

I actually use that album as an inspirational tool when writing a certain character - someone who will be new to the story come TGB.

Most of the songs I listen to evoke some kind of Epic-related thought, usually about a character in particular. I'll write a list of characters and songs that inspire me about them below, in case anyone finds it interesting. I listen to music quite a bit when I brainstorm and write.

Don't read into these too much, and definitely don't take them literally. Most song identification is based purely off of how songs make me feel, not necessarily what the songs mean. Don't think of these as character "theme songs," either. I could probably name ten songs for each character in the series. This is just a small sampling of songs that have actually helped inspire character traits or scenes.

Hi everyone!! derrick and i got together on Saturday and we successfully completed yet another brilliant podcast!! (Well I was brilliant but we all know how those eidolon's can be ~wink~ j/k).

The topic continues with where we left off last week with a guest appearance from loyal forumer Anita in Denmark (polyesterdk) and I guarantee it is an excellent treat for your ears. Also Derrick has a dog too and he had to yell at his throughout the podcast so I feel significantly better about having to scold my puppy for chewing on me.

Please keep in mind that the podcasts have a very large abundance of spoilers in each one so if you haven't read Hero yet don't listen!! You'll only ruin it for yourself!!! What up my fellow Epic-nauts!! As promised Derrick and I will be linking up again tonite to dive into podcast number 3 for some more speculation and good-natured ribbing (I may be an Ithini but i strongly suspect that Derrick is an eidolon....I will investigate. Updates on that to follow ;-p)

I should have mentioned this before but I forgot (ever forget? I do it all the time). If you have not read Hero yet I STRONGLY advise AGAINST listening. #1 because you will have no idea what the veck we are talking about and #2 it could ruin the book for you. So if you haven't read Hero yet or are in the process OF reading it, DON'T LISTEN.

At least not yet ;) Once you've read it listen away and feel free to bombard me with questions, comments, and proof that Derrick is an eidolon.

Loading the Bandwagon

Stone Aside Publishing is about to begin an aggressive marketing campaign for the Epic series, and according to Stephen, getting people involved with the podcast and forum is only the beginning. "We're at the crux of the series right now. The beginning has ended. There'll probably be a longer wait than most fans are accustomed to before book four gets released. We want as many people on board as possible between now and then. The more, the better."

The Epic series has never been a heavily advertised series, but that may change soon. With an emphasis on getting as many people on board as possible before the release of book four, Epic may embark into new territory: media advertising.

"We were never against having paid advertisements out there," Stephen explains, "it was just never something we could handle on an small budget like ours. We have a little more leeway right now with that, at least enough to sit down and look at creative, effective ways to let people know this series exists. If there's a time to expand, it's right now."

There is currently no release date for Epic 4: The Glorious Becoming, with Stone Aside Publishing adopting a new "when it's done" policy.

Podcast #2: The Great Race for Earth

The Epic Universe podcast has grown in size with the addition of Derek Collins as co-host to Stephanie Police. The podcast will shift format away from the interview style of its initial launch into a discussion format.

"The goal was never for me to be a primary contributor," explains Lee Stephen. "It was meant to be about the fun of speculation, and obviously I can't really play a part of that. I can't speculate when I know what's coming."

The quest for the Epic podcast's launch has been a long one, according to Stephen, having been a behind-the-scenes effort as far back as this time last year. With Stephanie Police securely in the wings as primary host, the task of finding a partner became a priority. When the position was opened on the official Epic forums, it didn't take long for someone to step up to the plate. Derek Collins (Dercol's Goatee from the forums) will join Stephanie Police as personality and theorist.

While Stephen may occasionally partake in a show, the main goal will now be discussion of the series' various plots and intricacies. The first discussion podcast, launched today, revolves around the Great Race for Earth as it pertains to EDEN Command and the various alien species. Fans are encouraged to be caught up with the latest novel, Hero, before giving the show a listen. "The last thing we want is for the show to spoil anything, and while it isn't starting off very spoiler intense, you'll definitely have some mild spoilers here and there."

All fans are encouraged to participate in the podcast by sending questions, comments, and their own theories to Stephanie and Derek.

Hero: My Official Review

When we last left the 14th of Novosibirsk, a lot had changed. A cloud had settled over the group. A lion had fallen.Hero picks up three months after the events in Outlaw Trigger. Scott Remington, now a Nightman Fulcrum, has cut himself off from the rest of his unit in almost every way possible. Aside from participating in missions with the group, he has little interaction with anybody.

Until a character from his past arrives, intent on healing the wounds created by the Machine. As she tries her hardest to heal the wounds of not only Scott, but the rest of the 14th, other wounds are created. Comrades and leaders fall, and treachery and betrayal come from unexpected sources.As the Eden leaders struggle to discover the purpose behind the alien attacks, Scott struggles within himself. Which side will prevail, the heroic Golden Lion, or the cold, brutally effecient Nightman Fulcrum?This is Lee Stephen's best work yet. It seems that each of these books has gotten better as the story progresses.

Once again Lee is able to convey the sense of emotion to these characters that makes them more than just names on a page. He takes some unexpected but not unwelcomed turns with this third installment, and I think that every person that reads this book will come away, not only impressed with the story that Lee has masterfully laid out, but thirsty for more. I personally cannot wait until the next installment is released.

I give Hero a perfect 10/10.

The only reason I did not give this book a Five was because I believed that the second book was a Five, and this was not as good as the second book. That having been said, this book is great otherwise! Had it been judged alone, and not compared, it would be a strong 5. Lee once again walks the fine line between action and emotion. There is enough action to keep the pace going, and enough emotion to keep the story fleshed out. I finished it in 3 days, and often read until 3 or 4 in the morning with "Just another page" in mind. Very good, I can't wait for the 4th one to come out!

Hero is about evolution. The evolution of the alien war and it's characters. The evolution of Scott, and what appears to be the evolution of the Nightman into something... more.

For the first time in the Epic Series, you are introduced to some aliens on a personal level, and you immediately know that these "people" will play a major role in the story. Who is H'laar and what is his message? Is Tauthin a friend to Scott or just a friendly enemy.

But not only is Hero the evolution of a captivating story, it is about redemption. Does what you have done, make you who you are? Or does embracing what you have done make you stronger? Is there forgiveness for a murderer? The answer to that may actually surprise you.

Dawn of Destiny Sells 1,000th Copy

Dawn of Destiny has hit a major milestone in independently published fiction, selling its 1,000th copy over the weekend. Stone Aside Publishing credits the release of Hero with the nudge that got book one over the hump.

"We actually thought it might cross that boundary a few months ago," said Lee Stephen, who serves as both company founder and series author. "2009 got off to somewhat of a slow start, but it was good to finally see that magic number appear." Stephen stresses that while 1,000 is a solid figure for an independently published novel, it is by no means the height of his expectations.

"The true test of the series will be how many copies of Hero sell. Not everyone who picked up Dawn of Destiny wanted to buy Outlaw Trigger. Some people who bought Outlaw Trigger may not have even read it, considering the two books have been packaged together on Amazon. So while 1,000 copies of Dawn of Destiny are important, I don't want to say I have 1,000 fans. I'd rather get that from Hero's sales figures."

So with 1,000 under his belt, Stephen's focus now shifts to the next milestone - one both smaller and bigger at the same time.

"I want Hero to hit five hundred. That was my first big goal with Dawn of Destiny, and it's my goal again. When that happens, I'll know there are five hundred people out there who are in for the long haul. Smaller number or not, that would be awesome."

Book 3 does a great job of continuing this Epic into new and exciting places. The story line easily held my full attention and I felt good about how the book ended. The text contains a lot of detail and some very moving scenes. I find myself trying to imagine what are the aliens up to? What are the humans up to? There seems to be plenty of mystery to go around. I am definitely planning on buying the next book and continuing with this series.

"April 18th always was a tentative release date. Due to our status as an independent publisher, sellers like Amazon don't always adhere to release dates we request. Books usually get placed on market one to two weeks after we upload them to our printer. We just try to time it as close as possible to hit the mark."

So what does this mean? Start checking Amazon! Hero should appear there within the next 2-3 weeks.

Speaking of releases, there's a little something else that recently hit the market: hardcovers for Dawn of Destiny and Outlaw Trigger. Both original books were reformatted not only for hardcover printing, but also to include maps and rosters. All books, both paperback and hardcover, will now come with each feature.

"Fans of the series who already have the first two books shouldn't worry," Stephen went on. "There's nothing different about the story itself, so there's no need to feel pressured into buying a newer version of what you already have. But of course, if you'd love to have hardcover versions, or if you'd like newer versions with the maps and rosters added, they are available for purchase."

Hero will be released in paperback and hardcover simultaneously.

What inspires you? The series is very complex... ideas like that don't just come from anywhere.

My interest in science fiction came at a young age. I actually have my father to blame for that! He got me hooked on Star Trek as a child. It's funny, because my dad is one of the gruffest men out there, not the type you'd envision watching science fiction late at night. But sure enough, his enjoyment of it became my passion for it. The release date for Hero is actually a little acknowledgment to my father, as it's being released on his birthday.

After that, I'd have to credit a few classic video games for really defining the science fiction genre for me. X-Com definitely got me into the military aspect of science fiction, and games like Master of Orion sparked an interest in alien politics and diplomacy. I couldn't name one specific thing that brought me to Epic, but it was a combination of all of the above. I'm sure I could name a few other influences, too.

As far as the inspiration for the Epic story itself, that's come from countless directions. It's a little funny, because sometimes the oddest things can inspire me seemingly out of nowhere. For example, the inspiration for Esther Brooking came from a fleeting glance with a total stranger. The EDEN base of Nagoya was originally Tokyo, until I got a chance to actually visit Japan and stay in Nagoya. The phrase "Battering Ram," which has kind of become a fan favorite, was coined during a game of Halo 2 with my friends while I was bashing a building's doorway with a Warthog, yelling "Battering Ram!" repeatedly at the top of my lungs (like an idiot).

I would be remiss if I didn't mention my Christian faith as well. There have been times after heartfelt prayer about writing that entire storylines have popped into my head. I have to credit God for that. I've also been inspired by a few Biblical personalities, two in particular, but I won't go into too much detail about that yet. I'll go so far as to say that two characters in Epic specifically, though not modeled after people in the Bible, were definitely inspired by them.

As for the complexity of the storylines, it's hard to pin down anything that gave me that outside of the aforementioned prayer. Sometimes things just come together in a way that even I can't explain. There have been times when I've leaned back after a brainstrike and asked myself, "Did I really just come up with that?" I consider those moments blessings from above.

Overall, I'd have to say that life inspires me. I strive to make my world real, and nothing is more inspirational than the real world. Everything from the wonders of nature, to the human condition, to the complexity of our own life storylines, has attributed to Epic being what it is.

It's a hard question to answer, and even I'm not sure if I've given you an answer I'm completely satisfied with. But hopefully it did give you a little bit of insight. My state of creativity is always evolving. I never know in which direction life will inspire me.

The former NYPD officer turned the shower knob and shut off the water. For a moment he did nothing; he only stared at the tiled wall that formed the back of the curtained stall.

I sat in front of my laptop for thirty minutes attempting to come up with a Thanksgiving message. What could I say in honor of this truly magnificent day? What should I encourage you to do differently today to show the world that you're thankful for the blessings you have? After thirty minutes without a single keystroke, I finally have the word that I'm looking for.

Nothing.

Thankfulness should not be reserved for one day alone. Thankfulness should come with every sunrise, and before every one of us lays our head down at night. It should come with both the good and the bad. It should come with everything.

Be thankful this Thanksgiving, and every day forward.

May God continue to bless us all.

Are there any movies, books, tv shows, video games, music you have really enjoyed lately? If so, which ones and why?

So far as television goes, I have to say that nature and history television has always been my favorite. Anything on Discovery, National Geographic, or the History Channel is sure to catch my eye.

One of my favorite shows lately has been Sunrise Earth, which comes on a couple of channels, usually in the early hours of the morning. It's a great way to begin your day, if you haven't given it a shot already.

I'm a sucker for old-school computer games, such as X-Com, Master of Orion, and the original Fallout series. I enjoy video games when I find the time, though I probably wouldn't consider myself a gamer.

Music is my thing. I'm a huge music fan, from country to alternative rock to instrumental. Usually, music inspires me to write. I've been listening the heck out of Saliva lately, which might give you a hint at the 'feel' of Epic's book four. Also a fan of E.S. Posthumus, and if you can catch their single "Unstoppable" on Youtube, it's worth a listen (and an iTunes purchase).

I don't get a chance to read much, ironically, dedicating so much of my attention to writing Epic. But I usually find books that are outside of mainstream. I enjoy nonfiction in particular.

This is the first part of an ongoing 'meet the author' series. Hopefully this will be a weekly or bi-weekly type of event.

Outside of Epic, one of my loves is caring for fish. This week I added two aquariums to my collection - a brackish water and a bayou tank. I've never tackled saltwater aquariums before, so the brackish tank is going to be good training for that. For the uninitiated, brackish water is a mix of salt and fresh water, often found where fresh water rivers meet ocean. It's a small tank, just 10 gallons. The water has been prepping for a few days now, so I'm hoping to start adding fish within the next two weeks. My wife gets to choose the fish, so I'm excited about maintaining a tank specifically for her.

The bayou tank is one I've been anxious to do, as it's sort of a flashback experience for me. When I was a kid, I would dip a net into the bayou behind my uncle's house and put whatever I caught into an aquarium. I got to do that again last week, once again with my uncle behind the same house. It's fascinating to observe up close what exists in our natural environment, and the fish are free. I hauled in four types of minnows, some grass shrimp, a dragonfly nymph, two juvenile crawfish, and a juvenile blue crab. The quarters are cramped, as this is just a 5-gallon tank, but everything is small enough to get along fine. I'm excited about seeing how this one turns out. I actually filled the tank with bayou water, so it should really provide for some neat viewing.

The other tank I have is a 29-gallon fresh water, which I've had sustained for several years. This tank survived two major hurricane landfalls, Katrina and Gustav! My current stock is: one albino senegalus, one large adult pleco, two large tinfoil barbs, one African butterflyfish, and four golden wonder killies. I don't see myself adding much more to this tank, as I don't want to overcrowd it.

I would recommend aquariums to anyone and everyone, as they're so easy to maintain. If you have any body of water nearby, a few swipes of the net can stock your tank for no cost. You never know what you'll drag up!

Every year, over 180,000 Americans die due to complications with diabetes. It affects over 16 million people in our country and over 100 million people worldwide. It is the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, peripheral vascular disease, peripheral nerve and autonomic dysfunction, amputations, and many other health problems. Every year, more people die from diabetes than breast cancer and AIDS combined.

Like many Americans, I was unaware of the intricacies of this disease until I saw how it affected the person I love most. As the husband of a type-1 diabetic, I witness the challenges my wife faces on a daily basis. Terms like "having a high" and "suffering a low" have become part of my permanent lexicon. I have been introduced to a world of needles, insulin pumps, and blood glucose meters. Experiencing her struggles and her triumphs has shown me just how much I take for granted.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Our goal is to bring attention to diabetes through literature, and to implore fans of Epic to consider donating to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) during this very important month. Because of the JDRF, diabetics have a network of international support and an organization dedicated to confronting and conquering this disease. There are two ways you can help.

First, you can go to www.jdrf.org and donate to the JDRF's fight for a cure personally. Just click on the "donate now" tab located at the top-right of the menu. You can give any amount you wish as either a one-time donation or a monthly commitment. No amount is too large or too small—every bit goes toward finding a cure.

Fans of the Epic series will have another option. In honor of this important month, 60% of Epic's November sales will go directly to the JDRF. Every book purchased will assist in the cause. If you know someone who might be interested in the Epic series, there is no better month than this one to get them to jump on board. They will be joining a good cause and discovering a new science fiction series at the same time.

Hero Release Date Coming Soon

Announcement to Come by End of '08

Fans of Epic, the wait will not be much longer! After surviving hurricanes and other delays, a release date for the third installment of Epic is about to be announced.

According to author Lee Stephen, the release date will be announced before the end of the 2008. After that, it will just be a matter of time before Hero hits the shelves.

"I couldn't be more excited," said Stephen. "Book three has been a very long process, longer than any other book. It's been a busy year."

Epic fans will have plenty to discuss before Hero's arrival. Stone Aside Publishing plans to start their promotional campaign soon, beginning with building the series' community message board.

"It's been a slow off season, but that's to be expected once the books have been out for a while. Don't worry, there will be more than enough to talk about in the coming months."

A glimpse of what's to come can be seen on Epic's deviantART page, where a new wallpaper has been uploaded for users to download and view. Could fans be getting a sneak peek at one of Epic's new characters?

Hurricanes....

I don't know exactly where hurricane Gustav ended up landing, but it was set to make a bull's eye on Lee's home town. Lee works in emergency operations, and stayed behind with the rest of the emergency personnel. It's very possible that the first floor (if not the second floor) of Lee's home was flooded.

It may be weeks or months before we hear anything from him. Don't worry though, silence is not entirely bad news - he knows how to take care of himself. After Katrina hit, he lived at work for a few weeks, followed by weeks of 12 hour days. Luckily, Gustav was not as bad as Katrina, but it could have been a lot better...

Not to mention that Ike did some damage to Louisiana. Granted, not as much as what happened to Galveston and Houston (I have friends and family in Houston -- they're ok, but my dad still does not have power and does not know when it will come back). I don't know the extent of damage to Louisiana from Ike, but they were on the 'dirty' side, so it may still be bad.

Please consider everything related to author duties on indefinite hiatus.

I'll let you know more once I've heard from Lee...

Getting back into Writing Mode

Being out of the public loop myself for the past month, I wanted to take an opportunity in this newsletter to get everyone up to speed on what I'm doing, where Epic and Hero stand, and what's in store for the future.

Lindsey and I have returned from our Honeymoon and are happily getting adjusted to married life. Every week brings new progress in our journey of creating a household, and we're having the time of our lives with it. From grocery shopping to furniture shopping, there's a lot that's needed to get done. We're getting there!

It goes without saying that Hero has taken a back seat throughout most of June. With the month coming to an end and the start of July before us, it's time to kick things back into high gear. As it stands, Hero is approximately 165,000 words long. I am still hopeful that, when everything is finished, the book will rest under 170,000 words total. That might mean some trimming and cutting is in order; I'll make those decisions as I come to them. Rest assured, though: you will be getting one big chunk of literature.

Fall is going to be a very exciting time for Epic and its fans, so if you've been waiting for a reason to get pumped up, you won't have to wait very much longer. Expect a tidal wave of news in the near future, from artwork, to first looks, to release dates. We might even have a special announcement for the holiday season.

Once again, thank you all for the dedication you've shown to this series and community, and for the warm congratulations I've received in light of my marriage. It has all meant the world.

Where She Stops, Nobody Knows

Want to know how Hero will end? So does the author. Lee recently said one of the most challenging aspects of Hero that he's currently facing is where to let it end.

"It's not a problem of not knowing what will happen, it's not knowing when. With Outlaw Trigger, there was no question as to where the book would ultimately stop. With Hero, there are a few possibilities. Several important events are going to happen in close proximity to one another, almost back to back to back. I've got to figure out which of those I want Hero to end with, and which one will lead off book four. It's more a matter of keeping the already-lengthy Hero at a reasonable size. As it goes now, this thing could push 170,000 words, almost the length of the first two books combined. If I can get that closer to 150,000, I'll feel better. Regardless, fans will have a ton to read and take in."

When asked if Hero would end in similar cliffhanger fashion as Outlaw Trigger, Stephen didn't mince words.

"My goal is ultimately to tick everyone off. I want everyone to be screaming, 'You can't stop there!'"

I mentioned in my last update that there's always a point in every book where I feel totally and utterly disgusted with what I've written. I'm ecstatic to say I've turned that corner. After reading everything from the beginning to where I am now, and after streamlining and making minor corrections, I could not be more satisfied with where book three stands.

As of this moment, Hero is just over 120,000 words long. I'm holding to my early prediction of 150,000 words overall. I'm finding that, as is often the case, I'm getting a great gust of inspiration toward the latter half of the novel. Never do I write faster than when the finish line is in sight. I'm not quite there yet, but it's coming soon.

Outside of this progress report, there's not much else new to say. Writing Hero has consumed all of my literary time, so there are no major events lined up at the moment. I'm aware that this is a very brief newsletter, but sometimes that's a good thing. My focus is entirely on getting this third installment finished and ready to go.

New Hope for a New Year

Although I am a fulltime author and publishing company CEO, literature is not my day job. I work for the Department of Emergency Preparedness in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, where I serve as an emergency coordinator. My job is mostly mundane and occasionally frantic. It is almost always open-ended. By that, I mean that though I deal with many situations, I find out the results of very little. I receive many calls from many people in many different troubling circumstances. And almost every time, when I hang up the phone with them, it's the last I hear of their situation. I report auto accidents, never knowing who lived and who died. I report industrial injuries, never knowing if the person in question made it. During Hurricane Katrina, I report countless instances of lost and stranded family members. Of them all, I heard the result of just one—and only because I saw it on the news.

That changed on January 1st, 2008, when a simple story of hope became a source of inspiration.

On the previous evening—New Year's Eve—I received a phone call from a citizen. It was a report about a dog walking on the I-310 interstate bridge. According to the caller, it seemed that the dog must have fallen out of a vehicle. She was afraid it would cause a wreck. As is my procedure, I contacted the local Sheriff's Office immediately, and a deputy was sent to locate the animal. The report came back negative, and it could only be assumed that the dog wandered off of the bridge and disappeared into the wetlands. Ninety percent of the time, this would have been the end of the story.

About an hour later, I received a disheartened phone call from a citizen. He asked if I had heard anything about a small female pit bull loose on the I-310 bridge. Of course, I had. He then went on to explain that the pit bull, whom he called "Sugar," was a neglected dog he had rescued. Unable to keep the dog himself, but not wanting the unfortunate animal to be euthanized, he had been attempting to find the animal a home. He explained that Sugar was one of the sweetest, gentlest dogs he had ever seen. He was even able to feed it by hand. He had finally found Sugar a good home, and he was driving her to her new family. While on top of the I-310 bridge, his truck was hit by a violent gust of wind, as often happens. Sugar's kennel flew out of his truck bed. Unable to stop on the bridge, he had no choice but to continue along the interstate until he was able to turn back around. By the time he got to the fallen kennel, Sugar was gone.

The gentle dog he'd fought so hard to save was now lost and alone. He searched for several more hours, walking the roads and woods and calling her name to no avail. Occasionally, he called me to find out if anyone had reported her. No one had. With a cold New Year's night approaching, he had no choice but to give up his search.

The more you deal with situations, the more hardened your emotions become. But having rescued an abused animal of my own—a White German Shepherd—I knew exactly how the man must have felt. I knew the wonderful feeling of rescuing a poor animal, and the consequent gentleness one finds in such a neglected dog, almost as if they realize what you've done for them. I remember being initially unable to tell my fiancée of the story. It was simply too painful to recollect.

Ninety-five percent of the time, this would have been the end of the story.

Enter New Year's Day. I arrive at work at 0700 in the morning to start my twelve-hour shift. It is not long after I arrive at work that I receive another phone call, again from the citizen in search of his dog. He asked if I'd heard anything, and I told him I hadn't. I remember wishing inwardly that somehow, this story would have a happy ending. I thought of how horrible a start to 2008 it must have seemed for the man. I could hear the disheartenment in his voice. In describing her to me again, he couldn't help but repeat the words, "she's so very gentle," and, "she's so very sweet." He finally sighed, and told me that if anyone reported a man in an orange cap walking along the interstate, not to worry. It was only him.

Ninety-nine percent of the time, this would have been the end of the story.

I remember the moment I got the phone call. I was in the kitchen of the place I work, when the phone rang, and I dutifully picked up the mounted wall phone. I stated my name and agency, as I do every work day, over and over again. As always, I wondered what kind of unfortunate situation I'd have to coordinate. After all, nobody calls emergency preparedness for something good.

He didn't even say who he was, but he didn't have to. The moment I heard him speak, I knew exactly who I was talking to.

"I found her!"

It was the man in search of his dog—the dog he'd lost on an interstate bridge the evening before. He had searched everywhere. He had walked through grassy fields and on the sides of roads. He had walked on the outskirts of Louisiana wetlands and beneath an interstate bridge, calling her name over and over without success. But today, success found him. Sugar was within a hundred yards from where he happened to park—in the opposite direction.

"I thought she was a pile of garbage in the distance," he said, "until she lifted her head when I called her name." She was on the other side of a small canal. He waded across waist-deep water in forty-degree weather to get her back.

I could hear the joy beaming from his voice, and though I'd never seen this man before in my life, I couldn't help but visualize a smile stretching across his face, from one ear to the next. Truth be told, I was smiling that wide, too. He told me how excited Sugar was to see him, and how she ran to him and almost leapt in his arms. Sugar was safe again.

I knew what the eventual outcome of the story would be. He had been searching for a home for Sugar because he was unable to keep her himself. Soon, he would wave goodbye to her as she went to a new family of her own. But I knew he'd never forget her. She wouldn't forget him, either. You can see a picture of Sugar, kindly donated by the owner, at the top of this newsletter.

As an author, it is my job to come up with fantastic situations. It is my job to make up miracles. But as I've come to learn so many times before, nothing compares to the real miracles of life. It seemed amazingly appropriate that, on the last day of 2007, a man and his lost dog seemed all but without hope, only to find that the first day of 2008 brought them back together.

There are ups and downs in every part of life. I know this myself all too well. This experience serves as a lesson to all of us. Never let an impossible situation bring you too far down to come up for air. Hope could be a moment away.

May 2008 bring hope to us all.

Hero, the third installment of the Epic series, is already the longest book in the Epic series to date. According to author Lee Stephen, the 120,000-word mark was recently surpassed, far beyond the 99,000 words that made up Dawn of Destiny.

"There's still a ways to go yet," said Stephen, "but I'm very pleased with what I've got so far. A book can't be long just for the sake of being long, it's got to have purpose. Hero definitely has that."

He went on to state that Hero could reach as many as 150,000 words before its completion.

Dawn of Destiny lies at the intersection of faith and science fiction. Science fiction may have characters who subscribe to a particular creed, but rarely in the genre is theme of faith so integral to plot or character development. Don’t let that scare all of you secular humanists out there. Underneath this theme is a tightly plotted military science fiction book that provides a glimpse of a future Earth under the constant threat of attack by one of three extra-terrestrial groups. The characters are memorable, the world building maintains the right pace of mystery and revelation, and the writing is easily digestible. In fact, I would say that Lee Stephen and John Scalzi have a lot in common in terms of style, belonging to the group of the “New Comprenhensible” that Scalzi sometimes prattles about.

Outlaw Trigger Review

Outlaw Trigger is a dark glimpse into the psychology of loss and the resulting crisis of faith.

Lee Stephen has outdone himself with this excellent work. The hero of Dawn of Destiny, Scott Remington, continues his journey as a soldier of EDEN defending the Earth against alien aggression. Written in a straightforward, comprehensible style, Stephen uses the Epic Universe as a sandbox to explore the dark side in all of us. I’m loath to say much about the plot of the book, lest I give away an ending that is as rewarding as it is surprising, but trust me when I say that it is worth every page turned.
